Вилли Лей — немецкий (а затем американский) писатель, инженер, популяризатор науки, один из наиболее последовательных сторонников идеи пилотируемых космических полетов.

Родился в Берлине 2 октября 1906 года. Образование получил в Берлинском и Кенигсбергском университетах по специальностям в нескольких разных областях — астрономия, физика, зоология и палеонтология.

В 1927 году Вилли Лей стал одним из основателей Германского Ракетного Общества. Участвовал в проектировании, постройке и испытаниях группой Вернера фон Брауна первых немецких ракет с двигателями на жидком топливе. В этот же период издал научно-популярную книгу «Космическое путешествие» («Die Fahrt ins Weltall», 1926) и составил антологию статей «О возможности межпланетных путешествий» («Die Möglichkeit der Weltraumfahrt», 1928) — последняя вдохновила Фрица Ланга на создание фильма «Девушка на Луне» (1929). Единственный роман Вилли Лея, «техническая научная фантастика» «Компания «Старфилд» («Die Starfield Company»), был издан в Берлине в 1929 году и на другие языки никогда не переводился.

В 1935 году Вилли Лей эмигрировал в США (американское гражданство получил 1944 году), где стал активным членом Американского Ракетного общества, работка которого была тесно связана с научно-фантастическими журналами (например, основатель и первый президент Общества Дэвид Лассер работал у Гернсбека редактором в «Wonder Stories»). Для этих журналов Вилли Лей начал писать научно-популярные статьи, которые публиковались в «Astounding», «Thrilling Wonder Stories», «Amazing» и других изданиях. Он также написал несколько фантастических произведений под псевдонимом Роберт Вилли, его первой НФ-публикацией стала повесть «В перигелии» («At the Perihelion», 1937). Начиная с сентября 1952 года Вилли Лей был включён в качестве научного редактора в редакционный актив журнала «Galaxy Science Fiction» и вел в нём авторскую научно-популярную рубрику «К вашему сведению» («For Your Information»); избранные эссе из неё впоследствии публиковались отдельными тематическими сборниками.

В 1950 году вышла знаменитая популяризаторская книга Вилли Лея с иллюстрациями Чесли Бонстелла «Завоевание космоса» («The Conquest of Space»). Именно эта книга открыла для многих молодых читателей не далекий фантастический космос, а космос реальный и технически достижимый, и во многом обусловила начало американской космической программы. В 1951 году эта книга была удостоена International Fantasy Award. В 1953 году эта премия была присуждена совместной книге Вилли Лея и Л. Спрэга де Кампа «Lands Beyond». Вилли Лей дважды (в 1953 и 1956 годах) становился лауреатом специальных премий «Хьюго» за популяризацию науки.

Вилли Лей скончался 24 июня 1969 года, меньше месяца не дожив до первой высадки человека на Луну — события, о котором он мечтал всю жизнь.
