A two volume slipcased edition, with an 80 page book by Sibley (illustrated by John Howe) detailing the history of Tolkien's maps, and the genesis of his vision of Middle Earth, accompanied by a second hardcover portfolio volume with 4 loosely inserted full colour reproduction maps, of Middle-earth, Númenor, Wilderland and Beleriand, based on Tolkien's own originals. This slipcased omnibus edition is an amalgamation and expansion of previously published material (from 1994, 1995 and 1999, including Howe's previouly published map of the Hobbit (Wilderland); the revisions are undated). Each essay also includes a gazetteer of placenames from each map.
