Небольшое off-line интервью с Майклом Ши
Список вопросов был составлен, но небольшой. Всё же немногие читали «Ниффта Проныру», да и те, кто читал, мало что знают о творчестве этого талантливейшего, на мой взгляд, автора. Поэтому интервью получилось довольно скудным, но... уж как есть. К тому же благодаря ответу Майкла была дополнена его биография. Замечу, что это первая биография и первая библиография автора в рунете. А для нас это первое интервью с зарубежным автором, что тоже немаловажно.
Dark Andrew: Покупали ли права на издание в России каких-то произведений, кроме цикла про Ниффта?
Майкл Ши: Пока ни одно российское издательство не купило права на другие мои книги. Можете сообщить публично, что в этом июле выйдет полное собрание моих рассказов и новелл в Centipede Press. Права на перевод можно купить у меня или у моего издателя, Джеры Уолтерс.
Dark Andrew, creator: Почему Вам так нравится описывать ад в разных его проявлениях? И как Вы представляете себе рай?
Майкл Ши: Мир сам по себе — ад. Я еще не видел рая, так как я могу его описать?
Dark Andrew: Какой вариант окончания истории Кугеля вам больше нравится — написанный Вами или описанный Вэнсом в «Саге о Кугеле»?
Майкл Ши: Я преклоняюсь перед великим Джеком Вэнсом — добрым, щедрым и талантливым человеком.
creator: Некоторые библиографисты считают «Nifft the Lean» романом, некоторые — сборником. Я, когда составлял Вашу библиографию, подумал, что ни тем, ни другим этот труд назвать нельзя, и присвоил ему почётное звание «роман-сборник». Интересно узнать мнение самого автора по этому вопросу.
Майкл Ши: Мир Ниффта так обширен, что, куда ни повернись, я нахожу его части. В этом мире можно описывать так много, что я с трудом могу выбрать одну длинную историю в определенном месте.
creator: На данный момент в России переведён, но не издан, «The A'Rak». Тем не менее, забегая вперёд, спрошу — будет ли продолжение? (подсказка: правильный ответ — «да, и много!» :) )
Майкл Ши: У трех опубликованных книг о Ниффте уже есть сиквелы. Я просто жду достойного аванса для их написания (прим. пер.: так у Майкла: написания, не опубликования!).
creator: Тим Пауэрс в предисловии к Ниффту дал совет юным авторам: «с первой страницы просто сойди с ума!». Согласны ли с этим? Мне, например, после «моря демонов» потом кошмары снились, я просыпался в холодном поту. Я серьёзно, не шучу. Читая «горную королеву», помню, казалось, что даже запахи улавливаю. Я ещё подумал тогда — если я, как читатель, настолько погрузился в ад, то что творилось с Вами, когда Вы это писали?
Майкл Ши: Я согласен с Тимом Пауэрсом — замечательным человеком и самобытным талантом. Что происходило со мной, когда я писал эти книги? Ниффт и его мир со мной происходили!
ALLEGORY: Ваши книги очень необычны и чрезвычайно выделяются из общей массы фантастической литературы. Что (или кто) является источником Вашего вдохновения? Что помогает, а что мешает творить?
Майкл Ши: Моя работа берет начало во всем, что я прочитал. Я очень много читаю. Оригинальность растет на почве из уважительно прочитанных великих трудов других авторов. Если ты самозабвенно восхищаешься работой других, это порождает в тебе собственное вдохновение.
ALLEGORY: Известно, что многие любят читать под музыку. Если бы автор помимо написания текста мог составить своего рода «саундтрек» к своим произведениям, какая музыка сопровождала бы Ваши романы?
Майкл Ши: Я не слушаю музыку во время чтения. Если книга, которую я читаю, не занимает всех моих чувств, включая слух, я перестаю её читать.
creator: К сожалению, в России пока издан только «Incomplete Nifft». Для тех из нас, кто знает английский, какие бы из своих книг Вы порекомендовали прочитать?
Майкл Ши: Почитайте сборник моих новелл и рассказов, который выйдет в этом июле в Centipede Press. Пока что Вы не знаете и половины того, на что я способен.

Please call me Michael.
Born 1950 in Los Angeles. Have lived in alaska, Minnesota, Spain,
France--but mostly, since I turned 16, in the San Francisco Bay area--live
there now, in Sonoma County, town of Healdsburg. My precious and talented
wife is the artist Linda Cecere, My son is at school in Germany, my
daughter is preparing for grad school in Oregon.
Writing chose me--there's nothing else I care about.
I write as much as teaching and housepainting allow me to write.
Great writers I'm enjoying lately: Cormac McCarthy, Mitchell Smith,
Thomas Harris, Charles Dickens, Edward Gibbon, many others
One hobby--running
My cherised dream is always the same, to finish whatever book I'm
currently writing.

1) No other book of mine has been bought by a Russian publisher to date.
Spread the word that the definitive collection of my stories and novellas
will be coming out from Centiupede Press this July--translation rights to
it can be bought from me or my publisher, Jera Walters
2)The world itself is hell. As yet, I've not seen heaven, so how could I
describe it?
3)I bow, always, to the great Jack Vance--a kind and generous talent
4)Nifft's world is so vast, I seize on pieces of it in ever direction I
turn. I see so much of that world to write about, I cannot easily settle
down to one long tale in one set place.
5)There are sequels to all three of the Nifft books published so far. I'm
just waiting for an adequate advance to finance the writing of them
6)I agree with Tim Powers--a wonderful and original talent. What was
happening to me as I wrote? Nifft and his world were happening to me!
7)My work springs from all I have read. I read very widely. Originality
springs like a natural plant from a soil composed of the great works of
others devoutly read. If you love the work of others with a selfless
admiration, it germinates inspirations of your own.
8)I don't listen to music when I read. If what I'm reading doesnt occupy
all my senses, including my sense of hearing, I stop reading it.
9)Read my collected novellas and stories, coming out this July from
Centipede press. You don't yet know the half of what I can do.
